Ce faible rayonnement est aussi connu sous le nom de «rayonnement fossile» ou «rayonnement à 3 K»(en référence à sa température). Aucun de ces noms ne correspond exactement à sa traduction anglaise de Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation ou désormais Cosmic Microwave Background(littéralement «(rayonnement) micro-onde de fond cosmique »). En français, l'abréviation la plus couramment utilisée pour le nommer est CMB, issu de l'anglais. On trouve également les abréviations anglaises CMBR et françaises FDC(plus rarement).

The radiation of man's natural environment, consisting of that which comes from cosmic rays and from the naturally radioactive elements of the earth, including that from within man's body.

Everyone is exposed to varying amounts of natural ionizing radiation every day. This natural background radiation from cosmic rays, from radioactive material in soil, rocks, the foods we eat, the houses we live in and even from the natural radioactive materials within our own bodies contributes to about two-thirds of our annual radiation exposure.

Exposition à la radioactivité naturelle. L’homme est exposé en permanence à un rayonnement naturel qui a trois origines : le rayonnement cosmique, les radioéléments «cosmogéniques» engendrés par le rayonnement cosmique et les radioéléments «primordiaux» présents sur Terre depuis la formation du système solaire, et leurs descendants. Des protons et des particules alpha provenant de la galaxie et du Soleil frappent la haute atmosphère de la Terre et donnent naissance à un rayonnement cosmique secondaire [...] et à des radioéléments [...] Ces radioéléments se retrouvent dans tous les organismes vivants, dilués dans les isotopes stables correspondants.

OBS

À notre avis, les termes «rayonnement naturel»(en anglais :«natural radiation») et «rayonnement de fond»(en anglais :«background radiation») se rapportent à la même notion, mais sous un éclairage différent : le premier met l'accent sur la nature du rayonnement, et le second sur sa localisation. Par conséquent, on choisira l'un ou l'autre terme selon l'aspect que l'on désirera faire ressortir.

OBS

Ne pas confondre avec «radioactivité naturelle». Le terme «radioactivité» se rapporte à la transformation spontanée d’un noyau atomique au cours de laquelle ce dernier émet un rayonnement. «Radioactivité» et «rayonnement» ne sont donc pas synonymes, le premier désignant la cause et le second, l’effet.
