It is unique as the only multidisciplinary, bilingual performing arts centre in North America and features one of the largest stages on the continent. The Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, built in 1964 to commemorate the centenary of the Charlottetown Conference (1-9 September 1864), was the inspiration behind the founding of the Charlottetown Summer Festival [often designated "Charlottetown Festival"]. Construit pour commémorer le centenaire de la Conférence de Charlottetown(du 1er au 9 septembre 1864), le Centre des arts de la Confédération à Charlottetown a inspiré la création du Festival d’été de Charlottetown(souvent désigné «Festival de Charlottetown»). The Confederation Centre of the Arts was founded in 1964 as Canada's National Memorial to the Fathers of Confederation, who gathered at Province House in 1864 to discuss the creation of our country. Covering an entire city block, the Centre stands on what was the site of the old Charlottetown marketplace. It houses several theatres, an art gallery, restaurants, and a gift shop. Le Centre des arts de la Confédération a été fondé en 1964 en tant que monument national du Canada en mémoire des Pères de la Confédération qui se sont réunis à Province House en 1864 pour discuter de la création de notre pays.
