Canada is working through many international organizations and instruments to strengthen measures to protect the marine environment, including global fish stocks. In particular, the 1995 United Nations Agreement on Straddling and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks (commonly called the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement, or UNFA) provides the framework for the conservation and management of straddling and highly migratory fish stocks in high seas areas regulated by RFMOs. Migratory fish include those that spend part of the year in the Bay but migrate along the Atlantic Coast (e.g. Atlantic herring, striped bass, bluefish, squeteague, alewives, anchovies, and hickory shad).
