The "Sale of Goods Act" expressly provides that the doctrine "nemo dat quod non habet" shall not apply if "the owner of goods is by his conduct precluded from denying the seller's authority to sell". This would seem to mean that the owner will be estopped from raising his ownership where the seller has been given the appearance of acting as the owner's agent. However, it would seem clear from the cases that the principle of estoppel is not confined to instances of apparent or ostensible agency but may extend to cases of apparent or ostensible ownership on the part of the seller of the goods, where such appearance results from the conduct of the true owner. Un gyromètre(mesureur de la vitesse angulaire) utilise, spécialement en mécanique, la propriété complémentaire de l'inertialité, qui est la suivante : l'action d’une force, ou d’un couple lorsque l'on considère un corps en rotation, a pour effet de modifier l'état de stationnarité de l'élément sensible et de faire «tourner» la direction de référence de cet élément sensible. Par un dispositif appelé «moteur-couple», on est en mesure de faire tourner, à la vitesse de précession [oméga], l'élément sensible [...] vis-à-vis du boîtier du gyroscope. Inversement, par un dispositif de contre-réaction [...] il est possible de lier en permanence la direction de l'élément sensible avec le boîtier de l'appareil. Dans ce cas, on a réalisé un nouveau mode de fonctionnement, appelé bouclage gyrométrique. L'appareil ainsi constitué est un gyromètre.
