A legal transition is when a transgender, gender expansive or non-binary person or their parents help them obtain updated identity documents through the legal process. That could be a legal name change and possibly a gender marker change... Some parts of the legal transition can include changing gender markers on birth certificates, social security cards, driver's licenses, or passport names. The Vital Statistics Agency is responsible for administering and enforcing The Vital Statistics Act, The Marriage Act, The Change of Name Act and processing disinterments under the Public Health Act. The Agency registers vital events (birth, death, marriage, stillbirth and change of name) in Manitoba and provides documents as proof of those events. Legislation protecting privacy governs who can access records held by the Agency. Our database contains information from vital event records from 1882 to present for the Province of Manitoba. The city started as a trading post (fur trade, bison hunting and illicit-whisky trading) with the construction of a fort named Fort Calgary by the North-West Mounted Police at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers in 1876.
