The Solid State Power Control Module (SSPCM) delivers 120 volts DC [Direct Current] from the Station to the racks and converts it to 28 volts DC, and delivers that power to a three-outlet power strip for use by the payloads. The SSPCM sends 120 volts DC to the RIC [Rack Interface Controller], the AAA [Avionics Air Assembly], and the PEHB [Payload Ethernet Hub/Bridge]. The SSPCM also provides data interfaces for payloads, including analog (two for each middeck locker and one for each ISIS [International Subrack Interface Standard] drawer) and bidirectional discrete (three for each middeck locker and two for each ISIS drawer).

The Zarya control module, also known by the technical term Functional Cargo Block and the Russian acronym FGB, was the first component launched for the International Space Station and provides the station's initial propulsion and power. ... The U.S.-funded and Russian-built Zarya, which means Sunrise when translated to English, is a U.S. component of the station although it was built and launched by Russia. ... The Zarya module is 41.2 feet long and 13.5 feet wide at its widest point. It has an operational lifetime of at least 15 years. Its solar arrays and six nickel-cadmium batteries can provide an average of 3 kilowatts of electrical power. Using the Russian Kurs system, the Zarya will perform an automated and remotely piloted rendezvous and docking with the Service Module in orbit. Its docking power will accommodate Russian Soyuz piloted spacecraft and unpiloted Progress resupply spacecraft. Each of the two solar arrays is 35 feet long and 11 feet wide. The module's 16 fuel tanks combined can hold more than 6 tons of propellant. The attitude control system for the module includes 24 large steering jets and 12 small steering jets. Two large engines are available for reboosting the spacecraft and making major orbital changes.

The heart of Russia's power system is its Science Power Platform. It ultimately will have eight solar array wings with a span about 100 ft. They will be attached to the top of one of two segments that will form a tower some 26-ft tall. The complete assembly will be mounted on the top port at the Service Module's aft end. In addition to the solar array wings, the Science Power Platform will be equipped with radiators, pressurized storage space, and thrusters to aid in Service Module roll control. Attached to one of the Platform segments will be the European Robotic Arm and its transport trolley.

The power management and distribution subsystem distributes the power at 160 volts DC around the station through a series of continuous duty, DC [Direct Current] contactor switchgear. The switchgear has built-in microprocessors, controlled by Ada software and connected to a data bus running throughout the station. DC-DC converter units stepdown and condition the voltage from 160 to 120 volts DC to form a secondary power system to service the loads through solid-state switchgear. An improved version of the Calibrated Synthetic Viewing (CSV) system developed at JPL [Jet Propulsion Laboratory] that used models of objects being manipulated and realtime video data to provide synthetic views of the manipulator workspace will be tested. This technology is intended to enable the conduct of manipulator operations in spite of obstructions that prevent a direct view of, for example, the interface between objects being mated. Upgraded software will be supplied by JPL and installed in the ARMSS [Automated Robotic Maintenance of Space Station] and the GCC [Ground Control Console]. An earlier version of this system was tested in FY96 [Fiscal Year]. As in the previous test, the test scenario will involve changing out a Remote Power Conditioning Module (RPCM), an ISS [International Space Station] orbital replacement unit (ORU). The surrounding structure will be "mocked up" to represent a typical ISS structure and ISS procedures will be used for the changeout.
