Dans le cas [du] carottier à grenaille [...] le tube carottier est un simple tube en acier, avec couronne plate à l'extrémité, animée d’un mouvement de rotation rapide(100 à 200 tr/mn) sous laquelle, au fond du trou, on projette de la grenaille composée de sphères abrasives, en acier dur(l, 5 à 4 mm). La grenaille entraînée par la couronne, sous le poids du tube, roule et s’écrase tout en usant la roche par abrasion. Elle use également le métal du tube qui est en acier doux. Par le canal axial de la tige de sonde on injecte de l'eau sous pression et de temps à autre, on y jette de la grenaille : l'ensemble gagne le fond du trou. Pour permettre à l'eau de refroidissement de passer de l'intérieur à l'extérieur du tube, on ménage, à la base de ce dernier, une encoche latérale.
