Panaches horizontaux. Lorsque la température augmente en fonction de l'altitude, l'air est stable et il n’ existe aucune turbulence verticale. Le brassage horizontal n’ est pas aussi fort que dans les panaches coniques, mais il est toutefois existant. Le panache s’étale donc à l'horizontale, mais peu, sinon aucunement, à la verticale. Comme les vents sont habituellement légers, le panache suit aussi une trajectoire sinueuse à l'horizontale. La concentration des polluants dans les panaches est grande, mais peu d’émissions de sources élevées sont rabattues au sol dans cette situation, sauf lorsque l'inversion est dissipée due à un réchauffement en surface, ou lorsque le terrain monte à la hauteur du panache. Nous utilisons depuis un certain nombre d’années le lit fluidisé comme un outil d’étude de la sédimentation de particules macroscopiques(de rayon R >> 1µm) dans un fluide visqueux(sédimentation à faible nombre de Reynolds particulaire). Le lit fluidisé, dans lequel un écoulement ascendant de fluide compense, en moyenne, la sédimentation des particules, permet en effet d’obtenir une suspension stationnaire dans le référentiel du laboratoire(pas de vitesse moyenne des particules), avec de plus une concentration contrôlable simplement par le débit imposé dans le lit.
