La gazéification du charbon est très ancienne mais ce n’ est que récemment que, grâce au développement des turbines à combustion et à l'expérience industrielle de la gazéification des produits pétroliers, des centrales de production d’électricité IGCC [gazéification du charbon intégrée à un cycle combiné] ont vu le jour.
