La viabilité d’une unité intégrée gazéification/cycle mixte a déjà été démontrée : une telle centrale, mise en service en mai 1984 en Californie, produit environ 100 mégawatts d’électricité à partir de diverses sortes de charbon. Outre son efficacité et ses rejets peu polluants, une telle centrale présente un atout supplémentaire : sa flexibilité; on peut la construire en plusieurs étapes, ce qui minimise les risques financiers liés à une croissance aléatoire de la consommation d’électricité. On installe par exemple, dans un premier temps, des turbines à gaz qui, utilisant le combustible le moins cher, fonctionnent non pas au gaz de charbon mais au pétrole ou au gaz naturel.
