Originellement, le mot dominion s’appliquait à tout territoire reconnaissant la souveraineté britannique. En 1900, la nouvelle Fédération australienne et la Nouvelle-Zélande accédèrent à leur tour à l'autonomie, et, en 1907, les divers territoires pourvus d’un gouvernement responsable obtinrent d’être distingués dans la terminologie officielle comme «dominions autonomes». Dès lors, le terme «dominion» ne s’appliqua plus pratiquement qu'à ces derniers. Ceux-ci passèrent progressivement de l'autonomie à l'indépendance, et le statut de Westminster de 1931 les définit comme des États souverains, égaux en droits, librement associés dans une Communauté de nations, le droit de sécession leur étant expressément reconnu. Imperial Munitions Board, established November 1915 in Canada by the British Ministry of munitions, with Canadian government approval. Headed by J.W. Flavelle, a prominent Toronto businessman, the board was responsible for letting contracts on behalf of the British government for the construction of war materials in Canada. It began to establish "national factories," which it owned outright, to produce munitions that private manufacturers were unable to turn out. Under IMB direction Canada produced a wide variety of war materiel including shells, ships, explosives and training planes. Orangemen's Day, also known as Orange Day is celebrated on July 12th. In Newfoundland and Labrador it is usually celebrated on the Monday nearest to July 12th. Orangemen's Day commemorates the 1690 Protestant victory over Roman Catholic forces in the Battle of the Boyne in Ireland. King William III of Orange, the Protestant King of England, defeated former King James II, a Catholic. The Orange Order was established a century after the Battle of the Boyne and steadily grew in the 19th century as a patriotic bulwark against what many Protestants saw as treasonous Catholicism. By the end of the 19th century Orangemen's parades were commonplace in many Newfoundland communities. Reasons for refusal of agrément.
