Les sources consultées placent le séparateur-aspirateur dans la partie du moulin où a lieu le nettoyage du blé (screenroom) et non pas dans la partie où le grain est reçu. La machine s’appelle alors «milling separator». The crib annex obtains its name because it is built using the same cribbing principles as the elevator. It is usually partitioned into storage bins 2.7 metres by 2.7 metres or 3.7 metres by 3.7 metres depending upon the amount of strength required to coincide with the desired height of the annex. These annexes are normally about the same height as the elevator and for this reason, gravity is not used for filling them. Instead, they are filled using a horizontal grain auger or drag conveyor which leads from the elevator distributor spout to the selected annex bin. The cleaned and tempered wheat is now subjected to a series of grinding operations, of which the first five or six sets of rolls exert a crushing and shearing action. Known as the break system and designed primarily to bring about a far-reaching separation of the tough bran from the friable endosperm, this part of the grinding process is carried out on corrugated iron rolls, called break rolls, which revolve in opposite directions at different speeds. Each successive set of rolls takes the stock from the preceding one, after proper separation, so that they operate serially rather than in parallel. La mouture a pour but de séparer, sans l'altérer, la farine(constituée de l'amande pulvérisée) des issues, formées par les enveloppes du grain. Les premiers moulins étaient équipés de meules horizontales entre lesquelles les grains étaient laminés. Actuellement, on utilise des broyeurs à cylindres.
