It sometimes happens that circumzenithal arcs are seen when the large halo is not visible.

OBS

It is produced by the refraction of light through the 90° prisms of ice crystals, having entered through the horizontal bases and passed out through the vertical sides. Normally, the crystals are large, oriented, hexagonal plates. The circumzenithal arc is the high sky counterpart of the circumhorizontal arc. The circumhorizontal arc is low in the sky when the sun is high (above 58° elevation); the circumzenithal arc is high in the sky when the sun is low (below 32° elevation). The majority of circumzenithal arcs are short-lived, short in length and faint or moderately bright. However, very colorful circumhorizontal arcs can occur when the refraction is close to the minimum angle of deviation, corresponding to a solar elevation angle of about 22°.

L'arc circumzénithal est moins fréquent, car il n’ apparaît que si la hauteur du soleil au-dessus de l'horizon est inférieure à 32, 2 degrés. Cet arc est formé quand la lumière solaire entre dans le cristal par la face horizontale supérieure et en ressort par une face latérale verticale. Quand le soleil est au-dessus de 32, 2 degrés, la lumière est entièrement réfléchie à l'intérieur du cristal; c'est pourquoi on ne voit cet arc que lorsque le Soleil est relativement bas sur l'horizon. À 32, 2 degrés, la lumière ressort du cristal verticalement vers le bas; on verra alors l'arc circumzénithal comme un point éclatant au zénith. À mesure que le soleil descend(se couche), le point se déploie pour former un arc de cercle coloré et centré au zénith face au soleil. Pour être bien technique, lorsque le soleil est à 22, 1 degrés, l'éclat de l'arc est à son maximum et il est tangent au grand halo.

OBS

Il arrive parfois que l'on observe les arcs circumzénithaux sans que le grand halo soit visible.

A tangent arc is a patch of bright light that is occasionally observed along a halo. This occurs when sunlight is refracted by falling hexagonal "pencil-shaped" ice crystals whose long axes are oriented horizontally.

tangent arcs. ... The most common of these are the upper and lower tangent arcs to the halo of 22°. They form separate arcs when the sun is low, but as the sun climbs they join to produce the circumscribed halo. These arcs are explained by refraction through the 60° prism sides of columnar crystals oriented with their long axes horizontal.

Haloes are caused by reflection and refraction of light frm the sun or moon by ice crystals in the atmosphere. They may take the form of rings, arcs, pillars or bright spots. The type of halo formed can give information about the type of ice crystals present. Haloes may also be seen in midlatitudes and are normally formed by high, thin clouds.
