The ... stealth buoy ... has been designed to lie on the ocean floor until it rises to the surface in response to a sound, such as the noise of a ship's propeller. It can monitor an area within a kilometre or two of its placement, transmit data to a receiving station, and then return to the ocean floor to wait for the next event. The air-deployable buoy is a one metre long cylinder and weighs 11-kilograms. It contains batteries, a GPS [global positioning system] device and an Iridium satellite transceiver that can communicate over very long distances, and it is designed to work to a depth of 300 metres ... It raises and lowers itself by using an elastic collar that inflates to make the buoy rise, and deflates so that it can sink to the bottom again. 1, fiche 8, Anglais, - stealth%20buoy
