Dimensionless number which like its reciprocal, the Bodenstein number, characterises the degree of dispersion, being zero for plug-flow and infinity for perfect mixing. It may be calculated experimentally from tracer studies. At higher conversion levels, the effect of backmixing on reactor performance is more severe than at lower conversions. Le réacteur se présente sous forme d’une colonne garnie par un lit fixe d’enzymes immobilisées. On peut l'alimenter soit à flux descendant, soit à flux ascendant. Dans le cas idéal, toutes les molécules traversent le réacteur à la même vitesse et y séjournent donc pendant le même temps. On dit alors que l'on a un écoulement piston. Dans la réalité, il y a un certain échange de matière par diffusion, ce qui se traduit par l'apparition d’une distribution des temps de séjour(DTS). Cette DTS est caractérisée par le critère de PECLET :(...) Pour un écoulement piston, P est infini(D=0). Pour un réacteur parfaitement homogène P=0(D=[infini]).
