Titre d’un film de Aton Egoyan. Par une belle journée d’hiver, un drame frappe soudainement le petit village de Sam Dent, en Colombie-Britannique : un autobus d’écoliers plonge dans un lac glacé-quatorze enfants sont tués, de nombreux autres blessés. Peu après, Mitchell Stephens, avocat réputé, débarque au village et promet aux habitants endeuillés qu'ils seront dédommagés. Mais au fil de rencontres avec les personnes touchées par la tragédie et de retours en arrière, on découvre des faits troublants qui laissent entendre que le village avait perdu ses enfant bien avant l'accident. La vérité se met peu à peu en place, certains personnages se retrouvent à l'avant-scène, comme Nicole Burnell, une magnifique adolescente que l'accident a rendue infirme.
