Fredericton (le service de traduction provincial) parle du «fleuve Saint-Jean» (ou le Saint-Jean) tandis que l’Association touristique et le Bureau de la traduction fédéral disent «la rivière Saint-Jean» (nom d’intérêt pancanadien) ou «la Saint-Jean». Au Québec, il y a bien, entourant «le fleuve Saint-Laurent» ou «le Saint-Laurent», «le Bas-Saint-Laurent» (région administrative), «le Bas-du-Fleuve» (région), etc.; il y aurait donc lieu de dire «le Haut-Saint-Jean» s’il s’agissait d’un fleuve. Or, la désignation correcte étant «la rivière Saint-Jean», il faudrait dire «la Haute-Saint-Jean», ce qui fait bizarre! Cependant, comme le mot «rivière» ne fait pas partie de l’expression «Haut-Saint-Jean» et que le spécifique «Saint-Jean» en soi est masculin, la préférence pour la forme masculin s’est établie dans l’usage.
