Carbonell coined the term "mixed initiative" to indicate that with SCHOLAR both participants could take the initiative and ask questions. In the dialogue shown, the student typed "q/a" to change the mode of interaction to one in which he could ask questions and use SCHOLAR as an information-retrieval system. Mixed-initiative dialogue is one of the most distinguished aspects of ICAI programs; it refers to the capability for the student to ask a question and hence participate in a two-way interaction with the program. This contrasts with the typical one-way interaction (program presents question/problem, student responds) of conventional CAI.
