The meridian holes are semi-circular hollows, invariably having the arc turned to the north, and the chord to the south; thus serving as compasses and sundials to travelers. They are produced by the heat of the sun's rays upon small accumulations of gravel. The pebbles absorb more heat than the ice, and hence sink into the ice where the sun's rays act the longest, and with the greatest intensity.

Meridian convergency error is caused ... by the fact that lines of longitude (meridians) converge as they approach the poles. If the spin axis of a D.G. [directional gyro] is aligned with a meridian at one point on the earth's surface and then flown to a different location in any direction other than due north or south, it will remain aligned with the original meridian because of it's tendency to remain in one orientation in space. Due to the convergency of the meridians, the gyro will not be aligned with the destination meridian. The angle between the D.G. spin axis and the destination meridian is the convergency error.

The principal network, the "Twelve main meridians", is the main pathway for body energy circulation and connects the internal organs with the energy flow at the body surface. There are two Meridians for each organ, one on each side of the body in a mirror-image arrangement. Beginning at the Lungs, the network traces a pathway wherein each Meridian completes its part of the course ..., passing in turn through each organ. Terminating with the Liver Meridian, the cycle begins again at the Lungs.

The eight exta meridians have no reciprocal connections between the solid and hollow organs, or the interior and surface of the body. Their function is supposed to be like that of a lake, regulating the excess or deficiency of water in the rivers - the main meridians. Six of the eight extra meridians have no acupuncture points of their own. They use the acupuncture points of the twelve main meridians. They do not have a circulation of energy. The exceptions are the Governing Vessel and Conception Vessel, which not only have their own acupuncture points but have their own circulation of energy.

These extra meridians are also known as "Odd Meridians", "Irregular Vessels", "Curious Meridians" or even as "Marvelous Vessels" when the treatment with it produced marvelous results in chronic diseases while acupuncture treatment on 12 Main Meridians failed.
