In December of 1994, the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO) Array was completed. The TAO Array is a series of about seventy buoys carefully placed in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Each buoy has special equipment that records information about the water and the air above the water. All of the buoys work together, forming an array, to give scientists a big picture of climate conditions in the area. The buoys send their data to scientists everyday by way of weather satellites that orbit Earth. Since 1994, scientists have been able to watch the water and the air for signs of El Niño. Once they notice that the water is getting warmer, they can keep track of the other changes and help to make predictions about the effects of El Niño better than they ever have before.

En janvier 1985, sous les auspices du CIUS, de l'OMM et de la Commission océanographique intergouvernementale (COI) de l'UNESCO, le Programme TOGA sur les océans tropicaux et l'atmosphère globale réunissant les représentants de 18 nations s'est lancé dans un projet décennal d'observations. Au cœur du projet figurait l'amarrage de quelque 70 bouées fixes constituant le Réseau océan-atmosphère pour l'observation dans les mers tropicales (TAO) - disséminées dans le Pacifique équatorial. Ces bouées envoient en permanence par satellite des relevés en temps réel concernant la température des eaux à la surface, la force des vents de surface et le taux de salinité aux centres de recherche qui les utilisent, pour élaborer des modèles climatiques aux fins des prévisions météorologiques. Ces données TAO sont complétées par le parachutage de bouées dérivantes non récupérables, les mesures altimétriques par radar du satellite franco-américain Topex/Poséidon et les relevés des températures des eaux de surface obtenus par satellite grâce à des capteurs thermosensibles à infrarouges.

It grows wild in sandy coastal areas fringing the Mediterranean, in South Africa and on the coast of the Canary Islands ... Although sea onions are grown in cultivation, most of the world's supply of derivative chemical comes from the wild plants. The chemical may differ, depending on the color of the bulb's outer layers. Although one name for the species as a whole is red squill, two varieties exist: white and red. Both kinds contain the medical drugs for which the bulbs are sought, but the red variety, which is largely collected in Algeria and Cyprus, also contains a highly poisonous substance, scillirocide. Therefore, only white squill is commonly used as a medicinal source.

The dried bulb contains the cardiac glycoside scillirocide, which has the same pharmacological properties as other digitalis-like glycosides.

Winds blowing southward along the west coast of the United States -- because of friction and the effects of Earth's rotation -- cause the surface layer of the ocean to move away from the coast. As the surface water moves offshore, cold, nutrient-rich water upwells from below to replace it. This upwelling fuels the growth of marine phytoplankton which, along with larger seaweeds, in turn nourish the incredible diversity of creatures found along the northern and central California coast. Sensors such as SeaWiFS can "see" the effects of this upwelling-related productivity because the chlorophyll-bearing phytoplankton reflect predominantly green light back into space as opposed to the water itself which reflects predominantly blue wavelengths back to space.

The Portfolio Risk and Institution Simulation Model (PRISM) is a forecasting tool designed to assist CDIC in performing risk analyses on member institutions. The basic premise underlying the model is that the forecast of future performance is uncertain. Rather than producing a single outcome as in traditional forecasting, PRISM produces a range of forecast outcomes with associated probabilities of occurrence, which should provide valuable insight into the volatility, or risk, an institution may be subject to in the future.

Le Modèle d'évaluation des risques par simulation (MERS) sert à établir des prévisions quant au risque que pourraient représenter, pour la SADC, ses institutions membres. Ce modèle repose sur le principe que toute prévision est incertaine. Contrairement aux méthodes de prévision traditionnelles, dont ne se dégage qu'un seul scénario possible, le MERS aboutit à plusieurs résultats possibles selon différentes conjonctures et détermine leurs probabilités de réalisation.
