synthetic aperture radar; SAR: [A] synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a side-looking imaging radar usually operating on either an aircraft or a spacecraft. The radar transmits a series of short, coherent pulses to the ground producing a footprint whose size is inversely proportional to the antenna size, its aperture. Because the antenna size is generally small, the footprint is large and any particular target is illuminated by several hundred radar pulses. Intensive signal processing involving the detection of small Doppler shifts in the reflected signals from targets to the moving radar produces a high resolution image that is equivalent to one that would have been collected by a radar with a much larger aperture.

Un radar à synthèse d'ouverture (RSO) est un radar qui effectue un traitement des données reçues afin d'améliorer la résolution azimutale. Le traitement effectué permet d'affiner l'ouverture de l'antenne. On parle donc de synthèse d'ouverture. D'où le nom de ce type de système. Les radars à synthèse d'ouverture sont donc à opposer aux «radars à ouverture réelle» (RAR ou real aperture radar en anglais) pour lesquels la résolution azimutale est simplement obtenue en utilisant une antenne d'émission/réception possédant un lobe d'antenne étroit dans la direction azimutale.

la technique d'interférométrie SAR (InSAR) consiste à [établir] la différence entre deux images radar (satellitaires ou aéroportées) acquises soit a deux points de vue différents soit à des instants différents. L'hypothèse fondamentale est que la contribution interne, liée aux propriétés physiques, géométriques et diélectriques des cibles, demeure stable entre les deux prises de vue. The F-15, the most capable air force fighter in the world, will be improved with an advanced long-range AN/APG-63 radar with SAR (synthetic array radar) modifications. With SAR the F-15 Strike Eagle becomes an even more capable weapons system which can fly attack missions against ground targets in all weather, such as the notoriously inclement weather of Europe. Using SAR to analyze radar signals reflected from the ground -- at distances of over a hundred kilometers -- the system can display extremely high resolution images, discerning objects and features down to 10 feet in size.
