In November 1996 the Council of Europe adopted a Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine designed to ensure ethical medical practice (including tight controls on trials) in member states. In Canada, a new "Code of Conduct for Research Involving Humans" is raising hackles among the country's academics; subjects who withdraw in mid-trial can also "withdraw" their data if they feel they were tricked into joining the trial in the first place.
