A CANDU fuel assembly consists of a bundle of 37 half metre long fuel rods (ceramic fuel pellets in zircaloy tubes) plus a support structure, with 12 bundles lying end to end in a fuel channel. Control rods penetrate the calandria vertically, and a secondary shutdown system involves adding gadolinium to the moderator.

Les crayons sont rassemblés en faisceaux. Dans les premiers réacteurs CANDU, ces faisceaux comportaient 7 gros crayons; le nombre de crayons a été ensuite augmenté et dans les réacteurs CANDU les plus récents, les faisceaux sont généralement constitués de 28 ou 37 crayons d'environ 0,5 m de long et de diamètre 12-13 mm. Plusieurs faisceaux (de l'ordre d'une douzaine) sont enfilés bout à bout dans un tube de force.
