Dans le Canada méridional, à la place des quatre variations saisonnières de l'Europe de l'Ouest, il y aurait plutôt trois périodes : culturale [4 mois], transitoire [5 mois] et gélivale [3 mois]. De plus, partout, les périodes sont mal centrées; le froid est déphasé, le printemps étant "plus l'agonie de l'hiver que l'aube de l'été" (André Giroux). Enfin, toujours à cause des variations spatiales, les périodes semblables ne se produisent pas en même temps, à l'intérieur du pays.
