Until recently, HIB [Haemophilus influenzae type b] was one of the most important causes of bacterial infection in young children. Haemophilus influenzae is a pleomorphic gram-negative coccobacillus that may be either encapsulated (types a-f) or unencapsulated (nontypeable).
