An adverse effect to the health of a person or test animal that develops: 1. over time, following a single exposure to a toxic substance; or 2. from prolonged or repeated exposure to a toxic substance under conditions that do not produce that effect from a single exposure. [Source: A glossary that a free-lance translator, Mr. Etienne Shalom, has elaborated after having translated a text dealing with the transport of dangerous goods.] 3, record 1, English, - chronic%20effect

Just as one distinguishes between acute and chronic exposure, so must one also distinguish between chronic effects. Acute effects can be defined as those that occur or develop rapidly after a single administration of a substance, while chronic effects are those that are manifest after the elapse of some time. ... A single, "acute" exposure to a material (e.g., beryllium) produces a chronic effect, one that takes some time to become manifest. On the other hand, one can find substances that yield acute effects on each of a series of exposures but fail to produce chronic effects. 1, record 1, English, - chronic%20effect

5, record 1, French, - effet%20chronique
