Effet de barrière. Une falaise, une montagne ou une chaîne de montagnes forment un mur que le vent heurte et doit contourner plus ou moins brusquement suivant sa force et sa direction. Dans le cas où le vent souffle presque perpendiculairement à une chaîne de montagnes, il arrive que le phénomène, si l'air est assez humide, crée en altitude des nuages de type lenticulaire du côté du versant sous le vent.
