The Apollo spacecraft abort escape system was similar to that used in the Mercury Project, consisting of an escape rocket separated from the attached spacecraft by a tower. The rocket was provided, if required to lift the Command Module away from the booster to an altitude high enough for safe parachute deployment. 3, record 1, English, - escape%20rocket

Le BP 12 est testé en vol le 13 mai 1964 sur la base de White Sands au Nouveau Mexique avec une fusée de type Little Joe 2. Cette fusée était capable de propulser le CM [module de commande] avec le système d'éjection du CM à 10 km d'altitude. Ces tests permettent de valider la tour de sauvetage et le retour du CM en parachute. L'atterrissage se fait avec seulement deux parachutes, les suspentes du troisième s'étant cassés. Le premier Boiler Plate [(BP)] de vol, le BP 13 est lancé avec succès avec un Saturn 1 lors de la mission SA 6 A 102 le 28 mai. Le BP, un LM [module lunaire] adapté (le tronc de cône reliant le S4B, troisième étage du lanceur et qui s'ouvre en quatre pétales, libérant le module lunaire) le SM, module de service, ainsi que le cône protecteur avec la fusée d'éjection LES, Launch Escape System, sont mis en orbite pour la première fois. 1, record 1, French, - fus%C3%A9e%20d%27%C3%A9jection
