On semi-automatic or automatic firearms, a mechanism actuated by the magazine platform which retains the bolt/breechblock rearward after the last round of the magazine has been fired, indicating that reloading is necessary. When a fresh magazine is inserted, the device may release automatically or may have to be manually operated, so that the bolt/breechblock goes forward and chambers a round.
