Dès lors, chaque pierre doit être examinée attentivement avant d'établir le programme de façonnage qui donnera le meilleur rendement, à savoir avec un minimum de perte en masse et un maximum de pureté. Après cet examen de la pierre, on y dessine à l'encre de Chine le meilleur plan de clivage et, si le clivage ne s'impose pas, le trait de sciage. On appelle cette opération le marquage.
