Les "roches brunes", dues à l'altération de calcaires phosphatés ordoviciens, existent dans un ovale irrégulier entourant la ville de Columbia, ovale de 80 kilomètres de largeur et traversant tout le Tennessee. On les trouve sur la surface irrégulière et corrodée du calcaire; elles atteignent quelques mètres d'épaisseur et ont un recouvrement stérile d'épaisseur analogue.
