Ethanol can also be reacted with isobutylene to form ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE), which provides all the benefits of direct ethanol blends while reducing the vapor pressure of the gasoline mixture, thereby decreasing evaporative emissions that also contribute to smog formation.
