Les enrobages basiques donnent une quantité moyenne de laitier dense qui souvent a une couleur brun ou brun foncé et un aspect vitreux. Ce type d'électrode est souvent utilisé en courant continu, en polarité positive, mais il existe des électrodes utilisables en courant alternatif. Le métal déposé étant très résistant à la fissuration à chaud et à froid, ces électrodes conviennent particulièrement pour de fortes épaisseurs et des structures très rigides en acier doux.
