It is the society's position that there is a need for ongoing protection of M. and that no supervision order could adequately protect M. from his parents. The society submits that the parents physically and emotionally abused M. 's sister F. and that the very serious physical injuries sustained by her were intentionally inflicted by the mother and father. The society further submits that the parents caused serious emotional harm to M., as he witnessed his sister's chronic abuse. 4, record 1, English, - chronic%20abuse

It would not be an understatement to say that for many women, the experience of existing with a violent spouse is akin to living with a time bomb[. ] The accuracy of this metaphor is attested to in a recent court case in Halifax[. ] The abusive spouse had threatened to kill his ex-wife. The abuser was sentenced to jail for 6 months, placed on probation for two years with non-association conditions, prohibited from alcohol and non-prescription drugs and required to obtain substance abuse and mental health counselling. 3, record 2, English, - abusive%20spouse

Air-displacement plethysmography is a densitometry technique used to determine body composition with air displacement(instead of water displacement, as used with hydrostatic weighing) to determine body volume. The equipment consists of a closed airtight chamber... The volume of air in the chamber when the chamber is empty is known. When a person enters the airtight chamber, he displaces his own volume in air. The volume of air remaining in the chamber is determined(with a correction for thoracic air volume). The person's body volume is the difference between the volume of air in the empty chamber minus the volume of air in the chamber when the person is in the chamber. 5, record 4, English, - air%20displacement%20plethysmography

Underwater weighing, or hydrostatic weighing, is an assessment of body composition based on the determination of body density of densitometry. To determine the density of the body, the athlete is first weighed on land and is then submerged in a tank of water to determine his or her underwater weight... The basic premise of this technique is that fat-free mass sinks and fat floats; therefore, the more the body weighs in the water, the less fat within the body. 3, record 5, English, - hydrostatic%20weighing

St. Patrick's Day is observed each year on March 17. St. Patrick's Day is not an official national holiday in Canada. It is, however, a provincial holiday in Newfoundland. St. Patrick's Day invokes the spirit of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland who is credited with bringing Christianity to the island. Observed as a religious occasion in Ireland, in Canada, it is often marked with festive parades and the wearing of green. It is believed that Patrick was born in Kilpatrick Scotland. When Patrick was in his early teens, he was captured during a raid and taken to Ireland as a slave. There he learned to tend and herd sheep. At this time, Druids and pagans occupied Ireland. Patrick learned the practices and language of his captors. Because of the hardships he faced, Patrick turned to God. When Patrick was twenty, God came to him in a dream and advised him to go to the coast. Patrick escaped and sailers took him back to Britain where he was reunited with his parents. But Ireland beckoned to the young man through is dreams, so Patrick entered the priesthood, was ordained as a bishop and returned to the Emerald Isle in March 433. He traveled across the country converting the people to Christianity. 1, record 7, English, - St%2E%20Patrick%27s%20Day

During the voir dire, Dr. Marshall discussed delayed disclosure of child sexual abuse, based on his knowledge of the scientific literature in the area. He testified that there are many factors which can affect the timing of a complaint, including the relationship between the child and the abuser and the nature of the abuse. Some factors might discourage children from reporting abuse, such as embarrassment; fear of getting themselves or others into trouble; bribery or threats by the perpetrator; fear of being punished or sent away; disruption of the family; or fear that they would not be believed. Young children might also not fully comprehend what happened or not see anything wrong with the abuse. 3, record 27, English, - child%20sexual%20abuse

The value chain... is a concept from business management that was first described and popularized by Michael Porter in his 1985 best-seller, Competitive Advantage : Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance. The value chain in its original sense was defined as a sequence of value-enhancing activities. In its simplest form, raw materials are formed into components, which are assembled into final products, distributed, sold, and serviced. In other words, the chain consists of a series of activities that create and build value. 2, record 44, English, - value%20chain

Primary activities are directly concerned with the creation or delivery of a product or service. They can be grouped into five main areas: inbound logistics, operations (production), outbound logistics, marketing and sales, and services. Each of these primary activities is linked to support activities which help to improve their effectiveness or efficiency. There are four main areas of support activities: procurement, technology development, human resource management, and infrastructure. 2, record 44, English, - value%20chain

Syntropic agriculture (also described as successional agroforestry) is not a technology package that can be purchased, nor a definitive design plan that fits all tastes. ... Syntropic agriculture is constituted by a theoretical and practical setting in which the natural processes are translated into farming interventions in their form, function, and dynamics. Thus we can talk about regeneration by use, since the establishment of highly productive agricultural areas, which tend to be independent of inputs and irrigation, results in the provision of ecosystem services, with special emphasis on soil formation, regulation of microclimate and the favoring of water cycles. That way, agriculture is synced with the regeneration of ecosystems. 1, record 56, English, - syntropic%20agriculture

While SEIU's [Service Employees International Union] unusually large number of fights with other unions is largely due to the efforts of its recent former president... to centralize his authority, inter-union fights are still nasty in a way rarely seen between market competitors.

2, record 100, Spanish, - acoso%20laboral
