C'est auprès de l'anneau L.E.A.R. (Low Energy Antiproton Ring) du C.E.R.N. qu'est étudiée la physique de l'antimatière elle-même, et son interaction avec la matière, domaine où bien des mystères restent à élucider. Des résultats surprenants ont été observés dans les expériences effectuées au Bevatron de Berkeley, produisant les premiers antiprotons. Lorsque ces antiprotons sont envoyés sur des protons, ils ont une plus grande probabilité de s'annihiler que de diffuser élastiquement. On s'attendait à ce que l'annihilation ne se produise qu'assez rarement, dans les collisions de plein fouet, parce qu'on croyait à l'époque que le proton et l'antiproton étaient élémentaires, c'est-à-dire de petite taille.
