for "backscattering coefficient" : Backscattering also plays a part in the reception of radio waves, where it is commonly expressed in terms of a coefficient, which is said to measure the "echoing area." (...) For large objects, the backscattering coefficient of an object is approximately the product of its interception area by its scattering gain in the direction of the source, where the interception area is the projected geometrical area and the scattering gain is the reradiated power gain relative to an isotropic radiator. 2, record 3, English, - backward%20scattering%20coefficient

There are two basic methods of measuring material with portable gauges, backscatter and direct transmission. "Direct transmission" is considered the more precise of the two, as it offers less error in measuring composition and compensates for surface roughness. To measure soil density, for example, the source is placed in a tube and inserted beneath the surface through a punched access hole. Radiation is then transmitted from the source to a detector on the base of the gauge. The density of the soil is determined by the radiation level at the detector. 1, record 21, English, - direct%20transmission%20method

1, record 21, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20de%20transmission%20directe

Pulse Compression. In collecting the SAR data, a long-duration linear FM [frequency modulation] pulse is transmitted. This allows the pulse energy to be transmitted with a lower peak power. The linear FM pulse has the property that, when filtered with a matched filter, the result is a narrow pulse in which all the pulse energy has been collected to the peak value. Thus, when a matched filter is applied to the received echo, it is as if a narrow pulse were transmitted, with its corresponding range resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. 3, record 34, English, - pulse%20compression

2, record 34, French, - compression%20d%26rsquo%3Bimpulsion

RADARSAT-2 will be capable of transmitting horizontal (H) and vertical (V) polarizations and, depending on the selected mode, the sensor will receive either H or V signals or both of the signals simultaneously. Therefore, in addition to providing complete RADARSAT-1 continuity, RADARSAT-2 will generate products with VV polarization, cross-polarization (HV or VH), dual-polarization (HH+HV or VV+VH) or quad-polarization (HH+VV+HV+VH) over a range of spatial resolutions.

For three-day intervals, an average radar cross-section (NRCS-40) is computed for each grid point by linear regression between the measured NRCS [Normalized Radar Cross-Section] and their respective incidence angles. NRCS-40 is the value of this regression line at an incidence angle of 40°. This procedure accounts for the incidence angle dependence of the NRCS, which is highly variable in spring when the backscattering mechanism changes from volume to surface scattering depending on snow cover, snow wetness, soil moisture and the penetration depth of the microwaves. 2, record 45, English, - backscattering%20mechanism

Multi-scale composite models based on the Bragg theory are widely used to study the normalized radar cross-section (NRCS) over the sea surface. However, these models are not able to reproduce correctly the NRCS in all configurations and wind-wave conditions. We have developed a physical model that takes into account, not only the Bragg mechanism, but also the non-Bragg scattering mechanism associated with wave breaking. ... Models of the normalized radar cross-section of the sea-surface (NRCS) at intermediate incidence angles are usually treated as a composite models describing the combined effects of Bragg scattering mechanism (effective for surface ocean waves whose wavelengths are of the order of the electromagnetic wave) and local-titling effects due to longer underlying waves (Plant, 1986, Donelan and Pierson, 1987, Romeiser et al., 1994, Romeiser et Alpers, 1997, Janssen et al., 1998). 3, record 46, English, - Bragg%20scattering%20mechanism

There are two basic methods of measuring material with portable gauges, backscatter and direct transmission. ... The "backscatter method" eliminates the need for an access hole by allowing both the source and detector to remain on the surface. Radiation is directed beneath the surface, and some radiation is reflected, or "scattered" back to the gauge detector by the surface material. This method ... is ... insensitive to density variations beyond a depth of 2 to 3 inches. However, the backscatter method is quicker than the direct transmission, and is useful when measuring uniform material such as asphalt paving. 1, record 52, English, - backscatter%20method

Lock-in is a fundamental physical phenomenon associated with all oscillating devices. Laser gyros exhibit the same phenomenon, in that the coupling mechanism is the reflection of light from one laser beam back along the path where it interacts with the oppositely traveling beam. Vapor to liquid and solid: Cloud feedback. The increased moisture from the warmer oceans should alter cloud distributions and characteristics. The nature of these cloud changes and how these changes will affect the radiative heating is unclear. Portable gauges are used in industries such as agriculture, construction, and civil engineering to measure things like the moisture in soil, and the density of asphalt in a paving mix. There are two basic methods of measuring material with portable gauges, backscatter and direct transmission. ... To measure soil density, for example, the source is placed in a tube and inserted beneath the surface through a punched access hole. Radiation is then transmitted from the source to a detector on the base of the gauge. 3, record 69, English, - portable%20gauge

3, record 69, French, - jauge%20nucl%C3%A9aire%20portative
