The lesser grain borer is a cosmopolitan insect, but it survives best in tropical climates where it attacks cereals as well as milo and sorghum.... The lesser grain borer is a much more ferocious feeder than weevils and what they do not eat they spoil. The female lays about 300 to 400 eggs and the larvae feed on the kernel remains left by their parents. At 34 degrees C, it takes 25 days for a complete life cycle. The lesser grain borer is a small brown insect with a cylindrical form, about 3 millimetres long. This moth, common in Great Britain and Canada’s West Coast, is often found in combination with the brown house moth. It is usually considered to be more of a stored product pest and less of a scavenger than the latter. The worst infestations occur in grain, cereals, and stored seeds such as peas and beans. 1, record 10, English, - white%2Dshouldered%20house%20moth
Record number: 10, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The adult is easily recognized by its conspicuous white head and thorax. The forewings are greyish-white with darker areas. The males have a wing-spread of about 1. 2 centimetres and the females about 2 centimetres. Most of the adults are females, each of which lays about 100 eggs. Like the brown house moth, the females vary in size and the larger females lay more eggs. The eggs, dull white in colour, are laid in cracks and crevices and often adhere together. The larva, which requires a relative humidity of at least 80% for development, is about 1. 2 centimetres in length and waxy-white in colour. The head and adjoining portion of the back of the adult are reddish-brown. This moth has no dormant stage and under summer conditions and 90% relative humidity, the life of this species takes about 62 days. 1, record 10, English, - white%2Dshouldered%20house%20moth

1, record 10, French, - %26oelig%3Bcophore%20%C3%A0%20%C3%A9paulettes

Molting of the outer cuticular layer of the body, as in insects and crustaceans. 3, record 48, English, - ecdysis
Record number: 48, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The process of ecdysis is initiated by a hormone apparently secreted by the thoracic glands which lie behind the brain and close to the oesophagus. The action of this hormone, or possibly of several hormones, is to stimulate the secretion of moulting fluid from glands in the epidermis. This fluid dissolves away the endocuticle, loosening the harder exocuticle and epicuticle which together form the outer layer of the exoskeleton. The insect then contracts its abdominal muscles, increases the blood pressure in the thorax and causes the cuticle to split in the weakest part, usually the mid-dorsal line. The insect emerges leaving the cast-off skin or exuviae behind. After a period of growth a new cuticle is formed. 4, record 48, English, - ecdysis
