Dans un corps isotrope, la matière répartie n'importe comment n'a pas de propriété particulière suivant les directions. Dans un cristal qui est anisotrope, il existe suivant chacune des directions envisagées des différences de distance entre les éléments, ce qui permet de comprendre les différences dans les constantes physiques suivant les directions.

Les cristaux anisotropes (biréfringents), c'est-à-dire ceux de tous les autres systèmes modifient la lumière polarisée et apparaissent lumineux et colorés entre nicols croisés.
