Hollan et al. (1984) emphasize that the view of the propulsion plant presented by STEAMER's simulation is meant to reflect less an exact physical model than a mental model as used by an expert. They call this effort to render a conceptual rather than a physical view the principle of conceptual fidelity: a simulation model is conceptually faithful to the extent that its presentation illustrates the conceptual abstractions that experts seem to use in reasoning about a system, rather than the system itself.
