[...] c'est la seule notation rationnelle, et c'est la seule utilisable pour le calcul minéralogique des faces [...]. Dans chacun des 7 systèmes cristallins est choisi un système d'axes de coordonnées, «ox», «oy» et «oz», déterminés de telle manière que ces 3 axes soient orientés parallèlement à 3 arêtes du solide primitif.

Chacune des faces ou troncatures sera notée en fonction de ces valeurs paramétriques; une face quelconque coupera de la sorte ces trois axes selon des valeurs k (selon ox), l (selon oy) et m (selon oz).
