L'intérêt des virus oncogènes, pour la recherche fondamentale, vient de ce que l'on peut suivre leur présence et leur activité moléculaire au niveau des cellules infectées, ainsi que la réponse de l'organisme à l'agression virale, grâce aux techniques d'immunovirologie. En conséquence, l'étude des cancers viro-associés conduit à l'espoir d'agir de façon de plus en plus efficace contre ces virus, par des vaccins ou d'autres drogues antivirales.
