The first device used to locate submarines is called Asdic (named after the Ati-Submarine Detection Investigation Committee) and was invented during World War I by British, American, and French Scientists. ... There is also a considerable amount of confusion about the origins of the term "ASDIC". To quote Willem Hackmann from Seek and Strike, "The Oxford University Press was prompted on 11 December 1939 to ask the Admiralty about its etymology after Churchill used the term in the House of Commons. After a certain amount of inter-departmental discussion, they were told that the word was the acronym of Allied Submarine Detection Investigation Committee. This body was formed during the war of 1914-1918, and organized much research and experimentation for the detection of submarines, however, no committee bearing this name has been found in the Admiralty archives." 1, record 1, English, - Anti%2DSubmarine%20Detection%20Investigation%20Committee

2, record 1, French, - Commission%20commune%20franco%2Dbritannique%20de%20lutte%20anti%2Dsous%2Dmarine
