El esmeril es una roca finamente granulada, entre cuyos granos predominan los de corindón, aunque también los tiene de mica y de óxido de hierro. Constituye uno de los abrasivos más eficaces, y se usa en gran escala de tres formas diferentes: aglomerado en muelas de esmeril; pegado con cola, en forma de capa, sobre un papel o tela (papel y tela de esmeril); en polvo, mezclado con aceite (para pulir metales) o con agua (para pulir piedras, labrar lentes y otros elementos ópticos, tallar lunas, etc.).
