Continental rupture begins with the formation of a rift valley and tilted block mountains. As the continental crust recedes, oceanic crust fills the gap. The motion of lithospheric plates is thought to result from convection currents of upwelling plastic mantle rock that lift the plates and cause them to split apart. 2, record 10, English, - continental%20rupture

The capital and largest city of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, located on the eastern side of the Avalon Peninsula, facing the Atlantic Ocean. The city, built on high hills, is reputedly the oldest city of Canada, the harbour being frequented by Europeans in the early 1500s. In 1583, Sir Humphrey Gilbert arrived in St. John's to declare Newfoundland officially an English colony. In 1832, it became the seat of government when Newfoundland was granted a colonial legislature by England. The city, once a fishing town, became a commercial centre for Newfoundlanders. Although destroyed by fires five times in the 19th century, it was rebuilt each time. In 1897, the city became the headquarters for the trans-island railway; after 1900, its pre-eminence was enhanced with an improved coastal boat service. With the entry of Newfoundland into Confederation in 1949, the city lost its traditional role as the fish export centre of the province and became more dependant on the federal, provincial and municipal governments for employment. Well connected by air and road with the rest of the province and the Canadian mainland, St. John's expanded its boundaries in 1992 with the annexation of the two communities of Wedgewood Park and Goulds. There is no regional government in the St. John's metropolitan area. 2, record 43, English, - St%2E%20John%27s

The city takes its name from the discovery of Newfoundland for England on 24 June 1497, the day of the feast of Saint John the Baptist, by Italian discoverer Giovanni Caboto, (John Cabot in English). The name first appeared in 1516-20 on a Portuguese map as "Rio de San Johem" and later, in a 1527 English letter as the "Haven of St. John's." Later French presence had it named "Saint-Jean" (sometimes shortened to "St-Jean") which Canadians of French origin still living there consider as the name of the city to be used by the French network of Radio-Canada. 2, record 43, English, - St%2E%20John%27s

2, record 43, French, - St%2E%20John%27s

Benthic life is subject to vertical zonation depending chiefly on light, moisture and pressure. This has led to the division of benthonic animals into two systems and seven zones. Proceeding from shallow to deep water, the first system is the phytal or littoral system, composed of the supralittoral, mediolittoral, infralittoral and circalittoral zones. The second system, the aphytal or deep system, is composed of the bathyal, abyssal and hadal zones. 3, record 57, English, - aphytal

All gasoline sold in Canada and the U.S. has to meet certain quality and environmental standards. Traditionally, the standards in Canada and the United States have been aligned. This has resulted in a fungible product. This fungibility has allowed product to be freely sold and traded among refiners in Canada and the U.S. This characteristic has resulted in the creation of a continental wholesale market. Although the introduction of new boutique fuels has reduced the availability of spot gasoline imports from adjacent U.S. markets, U.S. refiners still have the capability of specialty blending to meet Canadian standards if there is an incentive to do so. 2, record 87, English, - fungible%20product

1, record 87, French, - produit%20fongible
