Le dôme de pollution recouvrant les villes limite également les radiations nocturnes, de telle sorte qu'en moyenne, la température en ville est de 3 à 5 °C plus élevée qu'en site dégagé. La pollution ralentit le réchauffement matinal de l'air et la grande quantité de matériaux accumulateurs freine la chute de température en début de soirée.
