Afin de réduire à un échelle plus commode la très vaste gamme de pressions acoustiques, on utilise l'échelle des décibels (dB). Les niveaux de pression acoustique exprimés en dB traduisent plus facilement les impressions de l'oreille humaine. Sur l'échelle des décibels, un chuchotement à 2 m de distance aurait un niveau sonore d'environ 35 dB(A) alors que le niveau sonore moyen des bruits de fond dans un bureau serait d'environ 40 dB(A).
