Le système utilise une base de données altimétriques de terrain qui couvre l'intégralité du globe terrestre. Le fichier tient sur une cartouche mémoire au format PCM/CIA et peut être reprogrammé facilement pour prendre en compte de nouveaux obstacles artificiels (pylônes, etc.). Le GCAS élabore des messages d'alarme en confrontant cette base de données avec l'ensemble des informations issues des senseurs de bord (GPS, centrale inertielle, altimétrie, radiosonde, etc. quand la trajectoire prédictive risque de rencontrer le relief numérisé, le système déclenche alors une alarme.
