Finally, Kretschmer described an athletic type. These individuals have "balanced" physiques, are muscular, display the personality characteristics of energy and sanguinity and are predisposed towards aggression.

Kretschmer mit au point une méthode de mesure du corps qui l'amena à établir une classification selon trois types physiques : le type pycnique [...], le type athlétique [...] et le type asthénique [...]. Puis il découvrit que la fréquence des troubles psychiatriques variait pour chacun de ces types physiques, le type pycnique étant associé à la maladie maniaco-dépressive, et le type asthénique à la schizophrénie.
