Las reacciones antígeno-anticuerpo tienen diversas consecuencias y existen varios tipos: [...] de precipitación antígeno + anticuerpo, [...] de aglutinación, [...] de neutralización, reacción de opsonización.

En las reacciones antígeno-anticuerpo se distinguen 2 fases; la primera consiste en la unión del antígeno con el anticuerpo y la segunda en las manifestaciones que resultan de dicha unión. La primera fase se realiza por la combinación de áreas pequeñas tanto del antígeno como del anticuerpo, denominadas respectivamente determinante antigénico y sitio activo, que al unirse forman un complejo antígeno-anticuerpo. La reacción es reversible, siguiendo, por consiguiente, la ley de acción de masas y existen factores externos que pueden modificar dicha unión, como son: el pH, la temperatura y la fuerza iónica.
