Les termes "havre" et "port" étaient interchangeables jusqu'au début du XXe siècle; aujourd'hui "havre" est généralement réservé à la mer, tandis que "port" s'applique aux cours d'eau et aux lacs, comme à la mer. "Havre" s'entend surtout aux Îles-de-la-Madeleine et sur la Basse-Côte-Nord. Les Acadiens disent "havrer" et "se havrer" au sens d'enter dans un havre.
